What is NDIS Community Participation?
NDIS community participation is funded support that helps you take part in social, recreational and community activities — with a support worker to assist you before, during and after each outing. It sits under Assistance with Social and Community Participation in your NDIS plan, and it focuses on inclusion, connection and building everyday skills, rather than therapy or clinical care.
In practice, community participation funds a support worker’s time and assistance — accompanying you to an event, helping you get there, and supporting you to join in with confidence. It’s designed to reduce isolation, grow your independence and help you do more of what you enjoy.
Community participation can be one-to-one (a support worker just for you) or group-based (shared activities with others working towards similar goals). Both are shaped around your interests, your comfort level and the goals written into your NDIS plan.
At Essence Community Care, our Melbourne support workers help you choose activities that matter to you — whether that’s a weekly social group, a fitness class, volunteering, a hobby, or simply getting more comfortable being out and about in your local community. As your confidence grows, the support can step back, so you’re always building towards more independence, not more reliance.
What community participation typically funds:
- A support worker to accompany you to activities and outings
- Assistance getting to and from community activities where it meets NDIS criteria
- Support to join social groups, classes, events and recreational programs
- Encouragement to build social, communication and daily-life skills
